Overview

Stay in an authentic seaside town where local fishermen still work the harbour, enjoy fresh seafood overlooking the Adriatic, and explore the highlights of Puglia by train. Molfetta offers genuine Italian culture, excellent value and easy access to Bari, Trani, Polignano a Mare, Ostuni, Lecce and Matera — all without the need for a car.

Many Australians stay in busy towns and are unaware of the hidden places to stay and visit in Southern Italy. Puglia — Beyond the Trulli shows you the non-tourist areas of Southern Italy, staying just north of Bari on the Adriatic coast.

You'll stay in a seaside hotel and have time to explore this area without needing a car (and worrying about ZTL zones, parking and expense) — and you'll see far more than the trulli.

The trulli are traditional limestone dwellings with distinctive conical roofs, built without mortar from local stone and many centuries old. Today many have been converted into boutique hotels, holiday homes, restaurants and shops. Great examples are found not only in famous towns like Alberobello but all over Puglia — Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Cisternino, Ostuni, Monopoli and Polignano a Mare.

The town of Molfetta was an important medieval port connected to Mediterranean trade routes and the Crusades. The old town still contains winding alleys, Romanesque churches and centuries-old buildings that tell this story. Because it remains a fishing town, seafood is exceptionally fresh, and restaurants cater mainly to locals rather than tourists. We position Molfetta as the smart alternative to Alberobello and Ostuni — same transport connections, more local character, waterfront charm and better value in food, wine, accommodation and experience.

Itinerary
  1. Day 1 · Arrive Rome

One night in a central 4-star Rome hotel. A day to explore the Eternal City at your own pace — Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps or St Peter's Basilica. Overnight in central Rome.

  2. Day 2 · Rome to Molfetta (B)

Italian-style breakfast on the rooftop terrace, then continue your Rome experience or last-minute shopping before late-morning check-out. Fast train south from Rome to Bari — the Trenitalia Frecciarossa or Italo journey crosses the Apennines and reaches the Adriatic coast in around 4 hours. Short regional train (15–20 min) north from Bari Centrale to your Molfetta seaside hotel for the next 5 nights.

  3. Day 3 · Day trip to Trani (B)

Regional train from Molfetta to Trani (10–15 min, tickets included). Trani is known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic" — its Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino sits uniquely on the edge of the sea, one of Italy's most beautiful Romanesque churches. Explore the historic centre, the medieval Swabian Castle overlooking the harbour, walk the waterfront promenade and enjoy fresh seafood in the fishing port cafés and restaurants. Return to Molfetta at your leisure.

  4. Day 4 · Day trip to Monopoli (B)

Direct regional train south to Monopoli (50–60 min) along the Adriatic coastline. Monopoli is widely regarded as one of Puglia's prettiest coastal towns — a charming whitewashed historic centre enclosed by ancient defensive walls, a picturesque fishing harbour, hidden piazzas and small beaches tucked between the old town walls. Visit the Cathedral of Maria Santissima della Madia and enjoy fresh seafood and local specialties by the sea.

  5. Day 5 · Day trip to Polignano a Mare (B)

The famous cliffside town perched on limestone cliffs above the Adriatic. Visit Lama Monachile beach nestled in a dramatic cove, the Domenico Modugno statue overlooking the sea, and walk the cliffs above the water. Return to Molfetta at your leisure.

  6. Day 6 · At leisure in Molfetta (B)

A slow day at your own pace in Molfetta — the fishing harbour, Cathedral of San Corrado, the seafront promenade, local shops and markets. Optional add-ons: pasta making, cheese-making tours, wine experiences, or a day trip further afield to Alberobello, Ostuni or Matera. Ask us and we'll arrange it.

  7. Day 7 · Return to Rome (B)

Fast train back to Rome for your onward flight — or extend your Italian journey with us.

Extend your trip

Fitness & activity level
  • You will be expected to carry your own luggage.
  • Be able to get on and off trains.
  • Be able to walk 30 minutes at a reasonable pace.
  • This is a high-activity tour, requiring participants to be fit and active. It is not suitable for those with health concerns or difficulties walking long distances.
What to bring
  • A soft-sided suitcase you can carry yourself — hard cases don't fit some Italian lifts and cobbled streets.
  • Comfortable walking shoes already broken in — Italian old towns are cobblestone-heavy.
  • A light day pack for water, sunscreen, camera and a layer.
  • Refillable water bottle — Italian towns have public fountains with drinking water.
  • Adapter for European Type C/F power outlets.
  • Smart-casual outfit for dinners; a light scarf or shawl for churches (shoulders and knees covered).
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen — especially for Amalfi, Capri and Puglia coast days.
  • A light rain jacket or compact umbrella — Italian weather can turn quickly.
  • Personal medications in original packaging plus a copy of any prescriptions.
  • Photocopy of your passport stored separately from the original.
  • Swimwear and a beach towel — Lama Monachile beach in Polignano and the Molfetta coast are worth a dip.
  • Water shoes if you have sensitive feet — many Puglia beaches are pebbly rather than sandy.
Trip notes
  • Bring your passport and check it is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.
  • Confirm your travel insurance is in place before paying your final balance — we recommend Cover-More and can pass on our 10% client discount.
  • Contactless cards (Visa / Mastercard / Apple Pay) work almost everywhere; carry €50–€100 in cash for small cafés, markets and tips.
  • Italy uses the euro (€). Notify your bank of your travel dates to avoid card blocks.
  • Italian sim / eSIM data plans are cheap and reliable — we recommend an eSIM (Airalo, Holafly) for maps and translation on the go.
  • Tipping is not expected — round up the bill or leave a couple of euros for great service.
  • Restaurants typically open for dinner from 7:30–8pm; lunch 12:30–2:30pm. Book ahead in high season.
  • Most churches require shoulders and knees covered — carry a light scarf or shawl.
  • Trains: arrive 15 minutes early, validate regional tickets before boarding, and keep an eye on the platform display (binario) as it can change.
  • Water taxis and ferries in Venice / Amalfi / Capri run on the day's sea conditions — we adjust the plan if needed.
  • Puglia trains are regional and reliable but stations are compact — we'll walk you through validation and platforms on day 2.
  • Molfetta is a working fishing town; the harbour is at its liveliest early morning and around sunset.
  • Optional day 6 experiences (pasta making, cheese tours, Alberobello / Ostuni / Matera) can be arranged with us before you travel or on the day.
The fine print
  • Confirmation is not made until the deposit is paid; we then confirm within 14 days. Early-bird offers are limited to early deposits.
